Update from Liam Finn

Hello All,
How’s it going? Thought i’d write a bit of a catch up email before i
go rogue… out at the wild beach where the sand is black and the air
is sweet.
EJ and I are about to play our last booked show for a while… at the
Homegrown festival in Wellington New Zealand this Saturday. It has
been an amazing 2 years of touring hard… learning things and
forgetting them again, terrible roadside food and wonderfully
gluttonous catering.
It’s time to cook for myself, hide away and write some new songs.
Since returning home from Australia for some enjoyable New Years Eve
festivals, and pulling off a mighty cover of Enigma’s “Return to
Innocence” i might add, I have shaved off my beard and grown it back
again…

I did some more work on finishing the BARB record i made with EJ,
Connan Mockasin, Lawrence Arabia and Seamus last year.
The first single “LEO” pays homage to the great actor Leonardo
DiCaprio… written from the perspective of Connan’s 4 year old alter-
ego “DON DICAPRIO”.
The record should hopefully be coming out sometime mid year…
During the recording i made a little music video for one of the songs
entitle “NOT A BIRD”. It’s nothing to fancy… just some footage of
some late night dancing put to a rough mix of a song we’d finished
that day.

I also recently went over to Sydney to perform on the steps of the
opera house as part of the Rogues Gallery performance of sea shanty’s
and pirate songs. It was a crazy experience and i made some
interesting new friends. Some of the cast included the actor Tim
Robbins, Marriane Faithful, Peaches, Todd Rungren, Peter Garret… oh
god the list goes on and i feel like i should mention all of them cos
they were all really lovely. Except Marrianne, who I didn’t meet at
all. I’m sure she’s probably really nice too but years ago she talked
all the way through one of my opening slots at Largo…. playing
before Jon Brion… and she got shushed by my good friend and bass
maestro Sebastian Steinburg… who has amazing eyebrows…
Anyway, the show has been trashed and slagged in the media over
there… critics saying it was shambolic and amateur… other fans
complaining the cast seemed “drunk” and “uninterested”. Well it was a
pirate song performance!!! Of course we were appropriately drunk…
but not really the accused ones… and everyone took their
performance very seriously and gave it their all.
Personally I had a fantastic time… Trying to sing Harmonies with
David Thomas from cult punk back Pere Ubu on an avant-garde version
of “what shall we do with a drunken sailor”, that was MENTAL. That
guy is MENTAL… and then getting to play beats for Peaches while she
rapped about male pirate sex slaves in her own version of “Haul Em
Away”… that was RAD.

Thanks to everyone who has come to a show over the last couple of
years… I have had the best time of my life traveling around,
playing music in all kinds of places, meeting all kinds of people and
somehow ending up relatively healthy and only slightly bruised. I
look forward to when the cycle all starts again… but first i have
to turn all these experiences into uber-meaningful meloncholic
ballads or SMASH HIT singles… which came first? the record or the
tour?
I’ll update my blog www.liamfinn.tv/blog with occasional photographs,
and news of what isolation is doing to me… will i be lonely? will i
go mad?? how exciting.

Lots of love
Liam

  1. Liam, so great to hear from you, glad you’ve been having such an adventurous year! Now, if you’ll forgive me for shouting at you: PLEASE DO NOT GROW THE BEARD BACK!! It’s refreshing to see your bare face for once in so very long! :-D

And, please do come back to Canada some time so that I can finally get to see you perform for the 1st time ever :-D

All the best to you, you are absolutely a Finn, talented up the wazoo & to the extreme! :)

  2. Thanks Liam, awesome to get an update
    xxx

  3. Thanks for the update, Liam!! Hope to see you in the States soon! (Especially Upstate NY!)

  4. I saw you 3 times in the last 2 years here in Toronto and the first time I saw you and EJ I had never heard of you before. Your performances are legendary and you have an amazing amount of talent. I enjoyed you and EJ playing Lee’s Palace more then Metallica at the Air Canada Centre (seriously I did)

Keep on rock’n in the free world Liam as you give the world so much to enjoy!

  5. You look a bit Eddie Vedderish without that beard, Liam. I say it’s GOOD! You don’t have to hide, you know, even though you may be a bit shy without it….

When I saw both of your parents and Elroy at a recent Crowdies gig,
I thought “These Finns are one hairy lot.”

Never thought I would say that about your family. :-) But it’s true!

  6. Hi Liam — Saw you play with Crowded House in Austin; great concert!! Always admire a close knit and hugely talented family. Picked up your cds online after the show and love them. Looking forward to the new cds and hopefully to catch a solo show (San Antonio, please?). Love your photos by the way – you’re a very talented photographer and as one myself always appreciate shared photos. I was lucky enough to be at the front of the Austin show so have some nice ones I can post later on facebook of you and the band. Best of luck on your new cd, Carmela

  7. thanks man
